The launch of the Horizon Europe project CO2SITE in June 2026 demonstrates how the results of the Geological Service for Europe project (GSEU) are already being taken forward in new European initiatives.
June was a particularly active month for the geothermal community, with GSEU partners contributing to discussions on geothermal energy potential and related policy at several high-profile events in Europe and beyond.
Europe's subsurface is under growing pressure as demands increase for renewable energy storage, critical raw materials, groundwater protection, geothermal energy, and CO₂ storage. In a new EuroGeoSurveys position paper, geological surveys across Europe call for integrated subsurface spatial planning to support Europe's long-term resilience, competitiveness, and strategic autonomy.
On 25 March, the TU Delft Geoscience & Engineering department organised a symposium on Critical Raw Materials, featuring a comprehensive programme spanning policy, society, industry practices, academic research, and data availability. GSEU was represented by Project Manager Bob Hoogendoorn.
From the water we drink and the soil that feeds us, to the infrastructure we build and the raw materials powering digital technologies and the clean energy transition, geology underpins many aspects of modern society.
We took part in the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) Convention in Toronto from 1-4 March 2026, the world’s largest event dedicated to mineral exploration and mining.
Press release
Following the strong interest generated during Raw Materials Week in Brussels last November, the session Unlocking Europe’s Mineral Raw Materials Potential: New Data, New Projects, New Opportunities was held at the PDAC Convention in Toronto on 1 March 2026.

Europe has set ambitious goals for Critical Raw Materials. Achieving them starts with understanding Europe's geology, long before investment decisions are made, permits are issued, or exploration begins. Better geological knowledge reduces uncertainty, strengthens decision-making, and reveals Eur...

💭 Imagine waking up in a Europe where the minerals behind everyday life have vanished. No smartphones, no laptops, no vehicles, no infrastructure... the list goes on and on. A fictional scenario, but a very real challenge: access to minerals, particularly critical raw materials, is essential for ...
