The launch of the Horizon Europe project CO2SITE in June 2026 demonstrates how the results of the Geological Service for Europe project (GSEU) are already being taken forward in new European initiatives. Over the next three years, CO2SITE will develop an open-access digital atlas of potential CO2 storage sites across Europe, integrating geological, technical, economic, and regulatory information to support the planning of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) infrastructure.
Building on GSEU's geological knowledge, datasets, and digital infrastructure, CO2SITE shows how investment in harmonised European geological services continues to generate value beyond a single project. Rather than starting from scratch, the project will build on existing assets to accelerate innovation and support Europe's climate objectives.
Coordinated by TNO and involving several GSEU partners, CO2SITE highlights the long-term impact of GSEU and the value of sustaining these capabilities through a permanent Geological Service for Europe.
