Beyond Mapping: Turning Europe’s CO₂ Storage Knowledge into Climate Action

February 19, 2026

Within the framework of the Geological Service for Europe (GSEU) project, a new op-ed by EuroGeoSurveys in the February 2026 edition of The European Files outlines how Europe’s growing knowledge of geological CO₂ storage can be translated into concrete climate action. Scaling CO₂ storage in support of climate neutrality depends on access to robust and harmonised geoscientific data.

As Europe moves toward a coordinated, pan-European carbon storage system, trusted and comparable subsurface information remains a critical enabler. GSEU strengthens the role of national geological surveys in providing independent, science based assessments of where secure storage opportunities exist and how they can be developed responsibly.

A key milestone is the Pan-European CO₂ Storage Atlas, developed within GSEU and available through the European Geological Data Infrastructure (EGDI). The Atlas delivers a harmonised overview of Europe’s geological CO₂ storage potential, supporting evidence based policymaking at EU and national levels.
